William James is considered to be the first American psychologist. He, along with Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung pioneered the field at its inception. James had a particularly spiritual and evolutionary view of the human psyche. He was particularly interested in the experience of religious/spiritual experiences and their power to transform the people who have them.
In this course we will explore some of the central ideas of his conceptions of human transformation.
Session 1: The Illusion of Self
In the first session we will explore how William James explained the way an illusion of self emerges out of the stream of our consciousness.
Session 2: The Field of Consciousness
In the second session we outline James’ view of how human transformation occurs within a field of consciousness.
Session 3: Radical Pluralism and Vicious Intellectualism
In the third session we introduce two ideas that are essential to understand in order for us to transform.
Session 4: The Will to Belive
In the final session we work with the capacity for conscious belief that human transformation rests on.
